Berkeley Safe Neighborhoods Committee (BSNC)


A Resource for your Neighborhood Watch Group and Disaster Preparedness Group

Monthly Meetings with Speakers from the Berkeley Police Depart- ment and Berkeley City Officials; Workshops for Block Captains and Neighborhood Groups; Monthly Newsletter, Annual Forum for Block Captains Co-Captains and more.

BSNC
Purposes and Goals

Berkeley Safe Neighborhoods Committee (BSNC) promotes public safety in Berkeley, in partnership
with Berkeley Police Department, and in cooperation with Berkeley Fire Department by encouraging:
• Establishment & maintenance of Neighborhood Watch Groups to address issues of crime pre- vention & disaster preparedness.
• Networks for recovery from
crime, fire and natural disasters.
• Sharing of successful strategies among block captains for crime prevention & disaster prepared- ness.
To Meet These Purposes and Goals, BSNC:
1) Assists neighborhood groups to organize & communicate with each other;
2) Provides workshops for Block Captains & Co-Captains, i.e., Annual Block Captains Forum;
3) Holds Monthly scheduled meet- ings with Board Members and Block Captain & Co-Captains to create awareness of police and emergency services resources;

1) Eligibility for Annual City Dumpster for Neighborhood cleanups.
2) Monthly mailings with inform-
ation about public safety and
disaster preparedness.
3) Monthly Programs and Annual Block Captains and Co-Captains Forum.
4) Award for outstanding
neighborhood individuals and groups.
5) Participate in City of Berkeley’s Annual National Night-Out.
6) Networking with other neighbor-
hood groups and community resource people to share information on how to deal with issues such as:
• Burglary and car theft;
• Mail and identity theft;
• Vandalism and graffiti;
• Traffic concerns, parking;
• Door- to door solicitation;
• How to handle poaching;
• Drug-related crimes;
• Community Impact Letter;

• Home & business security survey: A police officer can visit your home or business and conduct an assessment;
• Crime awareness & prevention seminars: A variety of safety lectures and presentations are available;
• Citizens Police Academy; an annual 13 week program teaches community members how and why police services are delivered.
• Vacation Watch: Patrol Officers will keep watchful eyes on your
home or business while you are
away.
• Crime prevention tips and information are available.
• Crime awareness & safety brochures are available, on identity theft, personal safety, home security, youth crime awareness, drug prevention, how to start a Neighborhood Watch program, and more.

OES offers Community
Emergency Response Training Classes (CERT) to individuals and neighborhood groups:
• Basic Personal Preparedness; Disaster First Aid; Light Search and Rescue; Fire Suppression; Disaster Mental Health; Shelter Operations; Responding to Terrorism;
Fire Staff available for neighborhood meetings.

Membership in BSNC

Learn More About:
• Community Services available to establish a neighborhood group for crime watch and disaster preparedness.
• Successful strategies of model neighborhood groups to encourage communications and meet goals. Some successful activities have included:
1) Speakers from police, fire department, city council and other city officials to assist with special needs.
2) Newsletter to keep neighbors informed of any crime activities or tips for crime prevention, and information on disaster preparedness.
3) Special activities for a cohesive neighborhood such as holiday events (caroling, 4th of July picnics, block parties, Halloween safe-house lists). Other ideas are block sales for emergency equipment and “Light Up the Night”, for area safety.

Membership in BSNC

• Only $15 annual dues for each neighborhood group!

• Two neighborhood watch meetings annually with the beat officer for your neighborhood, or other city officials. Two official meetings will qualify your group for a free Dumpster from the city.
